Two One Three was born as a group in 1990, formed by Calvin "Snoop Dogg" Broadus, Warren "Warren G" Griffin & Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale. The name of the trio derives from the telephone area code 213, which served the city of Long Beach at the time of the group's formation, a tribute to the Oakland group 415. After collaborating together on several albums, the trio manages to work on a single studio album in 2004. The production is carried out by DJ Pooh, Nottz, Terrace Martin, Lil 1/2 Dead, Hi-Tek, Fredwreck, Kanye West, Jelly Roll, Missy Elliott and Snoop Dogg credited as Niggarochi, among others. LaToiya Williams, Boki and Dave Chappelle are the only guests on the CD.
Released by the labels of Snoop, Nate and Warren G, distributed by TVT, the album reaches number four on the Billboard 200 and the first among rap and independent albums. Certified gold in Canada, this is Nate's first project to reach the top of the chart, bringing back to it Snoop after four years and Warren G ten years after debut. With the three released at least one great album each, you should expect this record to be solid at the very least and sadly, that's not the case. It should be a gangster or g-funk album, instead it's a rnb / pop rap album, with some modern g-funk production and a good part of those 70 minutes are sung, although the performers' rap is good, laid-back, fluid, when there is. Kanye West provides the finest beat of the LP for "Another Summer". It receives mixed criticism from insiders and is ignored by fans, branded as forgettable: it's definitely a watered-down half-rnb record, but this document contains some of the best moments of the decade for Snoop Dogg, and listening to Nate is always a privilege. 6/10.
