Das EFX — Straight Up Sewaside

Sophomore jinx for Das EFX, released by Atlantic subsidiary East West Records, under the supervision of EPMD's Parrish Smith, to which the hip-hop duo is affiliated. The album is entirely produced by Solid Scheme, a line-up composed of beatmakers Chris Charity and Derek Lynch, while Charlie Marotta provides the rhythm for "Gimme Dat Micraphone".

Krazy Drayz & Skoob keep the formula from their previous record and spit out braggadocio, thug, and mostly abstract bars, for about three quarters of an hour: they don't say anything most of the time, but they do it with pleasantly smoothness flows on a decent production. The lyricism of the duo from Petersburg, Virginia, is quite decent and funny, sometimes monotonous, but manages to provide a decent foundation for a good hardcore and consistent record, however, it's precisely the rhythms that don't adequately elevate this record to the levels of the debut: Solid Scheme chooses jazzy and funky boom baps, sometimes cheerful, sometimes dark, with slow, light pounding drum machines and decent samples that give it a constant lean tone, on which the two performers can flow freely.

The soundscape of the project hardly ever changes, which makes everything sound a bit heterogeneous: there are neither strong nor weak points (the last track comes very close with a lame rhythm, a bad sample and a weak hook), the cheerful bars of the duo fall flat, many hooks are trivial and useless, and their deliveries want to be energetic and hardcore, but they manage to be in just a few songs, and their fresh and fast style sounds aged in this second effort. It's a personal album, without guests, which obtains a remarkable commercial success, sixth among the rap records, in the top 20 among the pop records: nonetheless, they did everything better in their surprising debut. 7/10.
