Eighth album for New Jersey's MC Crimeapple, on his third project in 2020, released on the last day of the year. The album, made up of eight short songs, is a sort of exercise of style for the rapper after releasing two great projects in 2020: also due to the release date, the whole project goes unnoticed.
The production is lower than the previous works, the rhythms are entirely designed by Buck Dudley, who brings out light, simple and lo-fi beats and some inspired samples: on this musical carpet, Crimeapple performs with a slow and hardcore style. "Champagne Tears" is an honest track, with dark melodic female sample looped in the background that seems pulls out from an occult ceremony in salon, the beat gives "Eyes Wide Shut" vibes, RLX and Crimeapple delivers with a style fit with the mood of the song. The musical choice is pretty average until the fifth pick, when Buck Dudley provides a switchbeat in the finale creating a tense rhythm with penetrating synths.
"Phd" has a good light rhythm with a better sample than the previous ones, however, the rapper's slow syncopated delivery appears to be lacking in bite, despite the fact that he seems to commit himself here. After a song with Da Flyy Hooligan and SonnyJim, the rapper closes this tape with "Selfish": great sax sample, light jazzy lo-fi beat, distant melodic female sample looped in the background, smooth hardcore delivery, here Crimeapple appears more inspired and energetic than the previous twenty minutes. Overall, it's an honest, but forgettable tape.
Highlights: "Champagne Tears", "Phd", "Selfish".
Rating: 6.5/10.
