San Quinn — Live n Direct

Second studio album realized by Quincy Brooks aka San Quinn, rapper born in Oakland who grows up since childhood in San Francisco. Guests are JT the Bigga Figga, Mac Mall, Willie D, D-Moe, Playa P Dog, Seff Tha Gaffla, Chuy Gomez e B Double O. The 17-years-old MC is a member of Get Low Playaz and the record is distributed by Get Low Recordz. The production is entirely entrusted to JT the Bigga Figga, who also takes care of most of the live instrumentation, helped, among others, by G-Man Stan, who creates the beat for "A Tight Lacin'".

The soundscape that JT paints is Bay Area mobb, in its most classic sense: velvety and relaxed musical carpets, quiet melodic samples, sometimes dark, midtempo and downtempo drums, scarce and dry, tight and hard, some ballad vibes. Lyrically, the guy effectively engages in delivering gangsta lyrics that don't stand out from those of the other hip-hop acts of the same period, plus, his record is too long, going close to the hour with fourteen medium-long tracks. The thing that allows him to gain more credit than several other artists who have made similar musical and lyric choices is that, unlike some more popular performers, San Quinn can rap. His flow is orderly, relaxed and effortless, even energetic in some tracks, on a pleasant production (there's a single slide for a few minutes in "Ya Betta Come on In", where the rhythm sounds annoying due to the overlapping of a snare drum in the background with another dry and poor one).

The guests are good rappers and deliver some of the best moments on the record ("A Tight Lacin'", "Young G's Perspective": Mac Mall eats the beat with a confident and flowing style; "Havin' a Ball", title track, "Live Without Music"), recommended to West Coast and Bay Area fans.

Rating: 7/10.
