Unique studio album released by hip-hop group Mad Flava from Dallas, Texas, consisting of Chris "Cold Chris The Soulman" Parker, J. "The Don Kasaan" Pimentel, George "DJ Baby G the Cut Selectah" Garza, and Erich "Hype Dawg" Krause, all rapping performers.
The production is credited to Hype Dawg, Courtney "The Commander" Branch, Tracy Kendrick and Mad Flava, while Docta Ling and Goldie "The Mack Mother" are the only guests on the whole project. Lyrically, these dudes bring out a lot of battle raps and say nothing for 20 tracks + 1 bonus remix, 64 total minutes of listening: nevertheless, several choices work thanks to a production that manages to faithfully reconstruct the sound of New York, be inspired and made in Los Angeles, performed by guys from Dallas.
The performers deliver bars with a syncopated and slow style, which varies several times over the course of the disc (Goldie's spot is good), while their lyrics are always functional to the rhythms: the choice falls several times on a jazzy boom bap composed of a tight and thumping drum and honest samples, often accompanied by random scratches. Few of their best musical choices are hidden in the skits, and sometimes the production is stunning and surprising: "To tha Break" is a brilliant soundscape with a nostalgic sound, purely underground NY, it seems to have come out of the DITC dungeons, beautiful. Dope cut which is matched by "Fools", in which producers place the same sample as "C.R.E.A.M.", "As Long as I've Got You" by The Charmels, on an excellent pounding midtempo drum. The album recalls the typical sound of '94, in positive, it's recommended for fans of the boom bap.
Rating: 7/10.
