Nems — Gorilla Monsoon

In mid-2019, Coney Island battle rapper Travis "Nems" Doyle collaborates with Brooklyn producer Frank "Jazzsoon" Sassoon, and releases a project destined to shake the heart and soul of the underground circuit.

The production of this unknown beatmaker is excellent, he brings out dark, simple, tight, minimal and hardcore jazzy boom bap rhythms, with dirty and dusty drums and good samples, which often pay homage to Biggie culminating in "Who Got Ya". Lyrically, Nems proves not to be your generic battle rapper and puts all his soul into the project, with several personal and street life excerpts in the middle of the braggadocio, proving to be a more mature artist in "Token of My Affection", among the best pieces (3 minutes + 13 of spoken outro). Among the guests, Conway kills his spot with a smooth raw delivery. Nems spits hardcore and tight for an hour, building a great album, among the best of the season: maybe it's a little too long, but it's very solid and inspired by the best boom bap acts of the 90s. 8/10.
