E.S.G. — Sailin' da South

The second studio album by Houston-based rapper E.S.G., born in Bogalusa, LA, is a typical sophomore jinx.

Composed of thirteen songs, including intro, outro and three songs directly from the previous album (the two "Swangin' and Bangin' and Smoke On), it has about 49 minutes of listening. It's produced by Mr. Optimo and Solo. The guests, all uncredited, are Big 50, Big T, Lil' Will, Yellowstone, Kalo, Montina Cooper and Flava. After the intro with drum south and g-funk synths, the album starts off badly with a couple of simplistic beats, dry, meager, cheap drums, bleh samples, and annoying synths. Then, the music improves starting from the slow "R.I.P.", ballad rhythm in which Montina Cooper performs the best contribution on the disc. The album goes on between gangster bars, discreet flows and more or less pleasant rhythms, nothing impressing. Cooper has another good moment in "Smoke On", another ballad with good rap, before the outro. The only exception to the monotony of the product is the Screwed version of "Swangin' and Bangin'": DJ Screw excels, he does a fantastic job here, choosing beautiful and melodic samples for the remix, where this rapper's voice sounds better than usual when distorted this way, it comes out the best cut of the record (and of both his LPs), easily. Released by Perrion and Priority, the album manages to reach the top 30 of rap albums.

Rating: 6/10.
