Debut cassette of Robert "Koopsta Knicca" Phillips, rapper from Memphis and member of the Three 6 Mafia from 1994 to 2000.
The guests are DJ Paul, who is also the producer of the entire project, Lord Infamous and Skinny Pimp. DJ Paul manages to create a minimal, bleak and dark soundscape, using scant elements, downtempo and midtempo drums, snare drums in the background, and dark samples. The tape represents the Memphis music scene well, while Koopsta Knicca spits out verses on raw themes with a slow and decent style. "Lay It Down" is one of the most successful tracks with Lord Infamous and Skinny Pimp both at their best, paving a rough and somber boom bap: the cut is one of the few not to be present in the reissue of the album, released in 1999, which features a clean sound and the same tracklist, basically. Between the two, I recommend the reissue, even if this is a solid tape.
Rating: 7/10.
