Lady B — (Part 2) Something for the Streets 2

Hip-hop gangsterism has always feels a bit at home in Memphis, guest and tenant of horrorcore, but it has never had too many female performers: Lady Bee tries her best to fill this gap and, in this tape, she succeeds with wide margins. So it appears, however, in reality Lady Bee left the musical world shortly before, unable to complete her previous cassette, but Skinny Pimp continues to credit with her name and uses a high-pitched voice to make the tapes.

There's a shooting in aid of the male intro that opens this tape, like the previous episode, produced by Skinny Pimp: he and Lil Gin are the guests of "Junts We Choke", boom bap that seems cheap, drum machine skinny slow and syncopated, simple chorus, and decent slow delivery of Lady Bee; there are light vibes and a nice sample. The next joint is more energetic, always skinny and cheap, with a good tight looped sample in the background, simple hook, dark samples, lean slow dynamic drum, smooth and slow delivery of Lady Bee, with a vibrant flow, she rides the beat well. Skinny Pimp brings out another great rhythm for the fourth pick, slow and tight drum machine, good delivery of Skinny Pimp with a synthesizer probably, well Lady B, flowing slow style, beat with calm and light vibes.

The next two songs feature other minimal beats, the productions are all cheap more or less but somehow they work: both choices have hip dance vibes, "93 Cherokee" boasts a decent delivery of Skinny Pimp, while Lady B performs well in the sixth piece, probably aided by the vocoder. The seventh track sees Lady Bee go strong with a smooth delivery on a relaxed, funky boom bap, soothing vibes, simple hook, light drum, good cut. Even "Smile in Your Face" has a funky rhythm, embellished with a dark sample looped tightly in the background and a light and vibrant skinny drum machine, good delivery from the rapper.

Skinny Pimp reappears in the ninth song and precedes a solo choice by Tha Joker, an underground rapper from Memphis who is part of the paddock of Gimi Sum Production, a local label linked to the Triple 6 Mafia that has distributed several similar cassettes since the early nineties: Skinny Pimp's boom bap, hip dance vibes, lean slow and tight syncopated drum, great rhythm, good MC delivery. Closes "North Memphis Outro", honest drum machine, but rhythm with an almost annoying sample, Skinny Pimp lets the beat breathe for a long time before spitting out a few bars.

Overall, it's a good hidden tape of the Memphis scene, recommended for fans of southern gangsta and of somber lo-fi beats: Skinny Pimp does a good job here and the rapping is pretty acceptable.

Rating: 7/10.
