Sophomore jinx for Lench Mob, a group that has changed their lineup several times, now composed of the same trio that made the debut album, T-Bone, Shorty and J-Dee: the latter ends up in prison for murder, and is replaced by Maulkie, from the duo Yomo & Maulkee, signed by Ruthless Records, who in 1991 released an LP. The title of the disk is another homage to a movie, this time to "Planet of the Apes" (1968).
The production is mainly done by Ice Cube, who's the executive producer of the disc and makes five rhythms. The other beatmakers on the CD are Mr. Woody, Madness 4 Real, Dr. Jam, 88 X Unit and QD III, while Da Lench Mob are credited with co-producing the entire album. There's a bit of live instrumentation that, my fault, I hardly ever noticed while listening: different guys play guitar over the course of the tape on different tracks, there are 88 X Units, Mike Simms, who also plays bass, Dirty Muggs, Stan Jones and Clint Sands, Dirty Muggs and QD III also provide keyboards in some tunes, and other instrumentalists include Bootsy Collins on bass and Darryl Fisher on keyboards and piano. At the mix, and perhaps this is one of the main problems, there are 11 different artists for 12 total tracks.
The group deviates to commercial and faded g-funk, completely losing themselves over mediocre unfit beats with their naughty, hardcore and punchy delivery style. Although Cube is behind the keyboards most of the time, the production is cheap and poor, pretty dull: these beats are annoying, made up of bad and tearing tight slow drums, pounding and slow, and generic and mediocre samples. Rapping is decent, at best, while the guys execute bad hooks. Mack 10 and Ice Cube, both perform as non-accredited guests of "Cut Throats", but hardly save their track, on a mediocre beat of the same Cube. Consisting of 12 choices and 44 minutes, this political LP attempt is forgettable: the commercial flop of the product marks the end of the group.
Rating: 5/10.
