Tommy Boy releases the fourth album of Above the Law, with guests such as Kokane, Daddy Cool, Enuff, MC Ren and Frost. The production is credited to Cold 187um and Above the Law, along with Julio G, Tony G. Michael Sims plays live bass and guitar.
Group leader Cold 187um gives a gangsta footprint to the product with generic arguments, without being able to stitch noteworthy moments due to a production that until this record was the main strength of the group from Pomona, LA, and which here sounds decidedly faded. The rhythms made by the group are deeply cheap, the drum sounds old, and I don't know what the budget provided by Tommy Boy was, but it seems that the use of the samples was forbidden.
They can't even sample themselves, because the entire catalog is property of Ruthless. Some of this sense of powerlessness can be heard in the 67 minutes in which Cold 187um raps with no real motivations. The tracks are not bad, the effort is just too long, a bit cumbersome, and forgettable. The following year, Above the Law quickly recorded the new LP and released it in the first months of '98, breaking free from the contract with Tommy Boy and becoming independent.
Rating: 5/10.
