Yall So Stupid — Van Full of Pakistans

Debut album for Yall So Stupid, hip-hop group from Atlanta, Georgia, formed by Shawne Bailey aka H20 (h twenty...), Sha Boogie, Unkle Buk, Logic and producer Xavier "Spearhead X" Hargrove.

At the beginning of the nineties, this crew only plays in a few city clubs, finally it's signed by Dallas Austin and LA Reid for Rowdy Records, 1992. Their album falls the following year and, although set as a full-blown Native Tongues album, it doesn't get any success at the expense of efforts in production and distribution, supported by BMG in case of success. This south group sounds like an East Side band: jazzy boom bap production with decent samples, tight and skinny drum and functional hooks to assist these guys' slow syncopated delivery (I don't know who is doing what and I don't want to know). Their style is energetic and flowing, but they struggle to entertain the listener.

The first beat is decent, the second cut is among the best on the tape, "85 South": jazzy boom bap with whimsical sound tightly looped in the background, tight drum, decent smooth delivery, simple hook. Now comes the first of eight skits (out of 22 songs, 1/3), this thing of putting a skit on each track, introduced to mainstream rap audiences by De La Soul, has killed many hip-hop records, including this one, which it would doubtless be discreet if it weren't for these innumerable and useless interruptions.

The title track has the best production, beautiful relaxed jazzy rhythm, slow boom bap, honest drum machine, simple hook, few piano key samples in the background, smooth slow delivery. "The Plant" is the latest good cut of the project, thanks to a jazzy beat with decent samples and drum midtempo made by The King & I. Overall, the album is bloated, bumpy and decent, exceeding the hour listening: the generic lyrics of this pseudo-alternative group are greeted by a dull and subdued production performed by Spearhead X in the second part of the disc. Not recommended.

Rating: 6/10.
