I.M.P. — Back in the Days

Debut album for San Francisco hip-hop group Ill Manered Playas (IMP), composed by Ronald "Cougnut" Fields, Carey "C-Fresh" Johnson, Lou-E-Lou, Robert "Rob V." Vernon and Stacey "Hitman Sting" Evans.

This group signs with a local label and produces 17 tracks, including two posse: "Frisco", with Celiski, Dre Dog and Chewy-C, and "Gangsta Shit" with Totally Insane, RBL and 2.2, both tracks are between the high points of the tape. The production made by the group itself with the help of some external producers (TC takes care of a third of the album) is quite varied, but generic, and doesn't fully exploit the slow, hardcore and smooth flow of Cougnut, main performer of the record. The rhythms are mostly composed of a decent and skinny funky / jazzy boom bap, honest drum, simple hook, slow syncopated delivery. The lyrics revolve around gangsta themes and the album as a whole has an excessive number of similar tracks, while retaining its own consistency and solidity that make it worth a listen for fans of the Bay Area and the early nineties gangsta scene. Even if it's not essential. 6/10.
