E-40 — The Mail Man EP

The second extended play in E-40's career was born as an anticipation for his debut studio album, and is therefore effectively his second official effort, released in 1993 by Sick Wid' It and SMG.

Produced by the rapper himself together with Studio Ton, the tape is originally composed of six long joints (none under four minutes) for a total of about half an hour of listening: its roots are firmly kept in Vallejo by the author, who calls two local groups, The Mossle and his The Click, to contribute to the project. Later, with the signing of the MC for the Jive the following year, the label reissues the EP with two bonus tracks, "Ballin Out Control" with Levitti, produced by Mobboss, and the remix of the controversial misogynist hit "Captain Save a Hoe": the record gains relevance in the charts, reaching the top 15 among hip-hop records.

Stevens is fit and enjoying himself, he improves production and lyrics over his previous attempts: lyrically, he focuses on gangsta and braggadocio topics, while musically incorporating the mobb and funk sound with which he has been so successful up to now. The union between a simple and relaxed delivery style, syncopated, slow, almost spoken and fluent, and funky-jazzy boom bap rhythms with some g-funk synths, slow pounding drums and solid samples, produces fresh and cheerful pieces that make up an honest and pleasant effort.

Rating: 7/10.
