Gregory "D" & D.J. Mannie Fresh — "D" Rules the Nation

Byron "Mannie Fresh" Thomas was born and grow up in New Orleans. Thanks to his dad DJ Sabu, in 1984 he becomes a DJ for New York Incorporated, a hip-hop crew of New Orleans. In the late eighties, Mannie Fresh starts to record with New Orleans rapper Greg "Gregory D" Duvernay. In 1987, they publishes their debut single "Freddie's Back" and the first LP, "Throw Down", with D&D Enterprises. After signing with Yo! Records, label from Dallas, Texas, the duo creates a second CD.

Mannie Fresh provides several good rhythms on this quite underrated album. His production features frantic and minimal beats composed of a skeletal and simple drum machine, on which he places excellent funky samples on top, realizing a fresh sound on which Gregory D can unleash himself without ever saying anything interesting, however his fresh delivery smooth and easygoing it's relaxing for these forty minutes. The producer manages to outdo himself and bring to the bottom some cuts, especially in the central part of the disc ("We Want the Funk", "Buck Jump Time", the title track), which became — unbeknownst to almost everyone — a significant influence, first in the local, then in the regional scene.
