Too $hort — Life is... Too Short

Too $hort's fifth album is one of his best, if not the best. It presents a funky and fresh production for the time, composed of good skinny and hard rhythms based on syncopated and minimal drum machines and simple bass lines in order to create a funky and not too harsh soundscape. The set is provided by Too Short along with Al Eaton, Randy Austin and Ted Bohanon, Al Eaton is credited to guitar and keyboards. Danger Zone and Rappin' 4-Tay are the guest of the tape.

Technically, his rapping shows no improvement in respect of his previous works, Too $hort continues to deliver decently in a light-hearted and fun way with a slow, fluid, a little monotonous flow, but in some always fresh — he delivers spoken for almost seven minutes in "I Ain't Trippin'" on a dystopian rhythm and in some ways the cut works — simple lyrics, focused almost exclusively on sexually explicit and defiant themes with its pimp mood, in Too $hort style. The public will reward this effort which presents gems such as the title track and the pre-g-funk of "Oakland" (present in other versions of this album) with platinum shortly after its release and with double platinum in 1996.

Highlights: "Life Is... Too Short", "I Ain't Trippin'", "Oakland", "City of Dope".

Rating: 7.8/10.
