Big Ghost Ltd. & Widowmaker — An Open Tomb... An Empty Casket

Collaborative instrumental album released by the producers Big Ghost Ltd and Widowmaker, for a total of 27 tracks and forty minutes which guarantees an honest replay value. The first part of the album is entirely performed by the producer affiliated to Griselda (16), the second one to the Portland beatmaker (11).

"Sonata in D(eath) Minor" opens the record with a splendid piano in D minor, jazzy dope rhythm with vinyl sound looped in the background, excellent intro followed by a simple and dark rhythm, jazzy and tense, incisive and tense boom bap with beautiful stairs, it seems to come out of "Jaws", the tension is palpable. The third rhythm of Big Ghost LTD also has a nice light jazzy beat, here with a sad piano and a dark rhythm, the mood is dark and tense for a beautiful noir rhythm. "Smorgasbord of Doom" is the fourth pick, the beatmaker remains on dark jazzy, providing a second excellent short noir rhythm with a light and sad elegant piano, dope.

His fifth instrumental choice changes formula, remains on the boom bap but is minimal rockin', with a jazzy beats and sparse and syncopated drum machine, rhythm level slightly lower than the best. "Ice Pick Acupuncture" presents a distant, sad and gloomy piano, which is the background to a gaunt and simple jazzy beat, with an excellent classic "love and direct, New York City" sample. The songs of Big Ghost Ltd begin to get shorter and shorter, so far no one has exceeded two minutes, but they're all short and quick. "Dark Forces in Me" boasts a skinny and syncopated drum machine that supports a simple and dark rhythm, with a female sample with a whispered and dark voice that binds to the next one, opened by a scream, so the rhythm is more dark and tense of the previous one, almost as if you had arrived in a Walking Dead clou scene, it's dark night, all dark, they're coming from all directions and there's no way out, leave all hope and surrender, the epic-apocalyptic production is tight and spectacular, excellent midtempo boom bap with a perfect skinless syncopated drum machine.

"Hot Yoga in Hell" is the first of the rhythms that I don't feel like sending directly between the highs of the project, it's a good rhythm, vibrant, lean and lively, simple and jazzy, but between the dishes, the looped organ keys and the pinches of distorted guitar there's something that doesn't completely convince me. The mood of the album returns to the dark boom bap of the tenth cut, vibrant and dark. "Karate Class Killing Spree" presents a simple and minimal production, boom bap jazzy with elegant piano and dope, therefore "Werewolf Brunch" is one of the rare instrumentals without drums, light and dark, with a tight looped howl in the background. Big Ghost brings back the elegant piano after the next two tracks, both rather short, the first has a dark and light beat, the second is a half-minute midtempo boom bap. After "Broke MFs in Your DMs from Hell", a splendid light, tense and gloomy jazzy boom bap with vibrating drum, the part of the producer launched by Hall n Nash is closed by "Rodeo of the Damned", an excellent boom bap with synth and jazzy elements.

"Theme From an Empty Casket" marks the first of a dozen rhythms by Widowmaker: he chooses an organ looped in the background to create a dark and vibrant rhythm, simple and minimal, with a sudden scream that anticipates the battery, thin and syncopated . Three instrumental songs followed with dark jazzy boom bap, before "Reprise": cold rhythm, shiny, dark jazzy, without drums, with a soulful female sample growing in the background, it has dark and gloomy vibes that make it one of the many songs all the height of those created by the expert Big Ghost Ltd. "Dark Home" confirms Widowmaker's ambitions: sample looped and chopped in the background, syncopated jazzy piano, raw boom bap, then excellent elegant piano in the background. The third track features an excellent sample looped in the background, extravagant piano dope, bells and synths for this raw and simple jazzy boom bap which anticipates two further highlights provided by the beatmaker, both vitalized by an excellent elegant piano dope: the first one is represented by the raw boom bap of "Wasteland", the second one from a splendid midtempo rhythm, "Double Agent". An interlude — pass me the term — anticipates "Night Caller", the last choice of the entire project, simple, minimal and midtempo dark jazzy.

Highlights: "Sonata in D(eath) Minor", "Massacre of the Unliving", "Bloodbath & Beyond", "Smorgasbord of Doom", "Cannibal Corpse Guitar Virtuoso", "Ice Pick Acupuncture", "Dark Forces in Me (Pause)", "The Zombie Orgy", "Cleanup in Aisle Doom", "An Empty Casket (Reprise)", "Dark Home", "Wasteland", "Double Agent".

Big Ghost Ltd: 8/10.
Widowmaker: 7.3/10.

Final Rating: 7.5/10.
