Pyhimys — Mikko

Solo studio album number fourteen for Mikko Kuoppala aka Pyhimys, rapper from Helsinki, Finland. For its contrived and commercial construction, it reminds me of Eminem's "Revival": clearly pop rap album, with pop hooks performed by guests and dance tracks for the club.

There is a different beatmaker to each song, so the music is never cohesive and the result is a short LP, but irregular and a little more cumbersome than necessary, not helped too much by the braggadocio lyricism chosen by the interpreter. On the positive notes, there's a good sonic variety that could appeal to different listeners, there are trap vibes, boom bap, slow rhythms, eclectic and lively ones, rnb pop hooks and many dance pop choices for the club.

Most of the record is dull pop rap, with some rare hip hop fillers: Aanti Koivula ("Matkalla Plutoon") and Evelina ("Punaine lanka") offer the best performance with rnb hooks, then the record drops a lot in the finale, with a guitar solo to tryna save "Fuck the World", a dance club song and an ethereal cut attempt, very badly done, with a chorus from host Jukka Pokka sounding lame. "Thyme Ö." is the best song, thanks to a light production made by the rapper himself, simple drum, spoken-word delivery, then comes the bridge that kills the cut, taken from a sample of "Loveson" by Bitch Alert, using a heavy guitar riff hard rock and Heinie Immonen's powerful voice for the hook.

The disc is released by the local division of Universal and comes first in the charts, it doesn't even need excessive promotion, the project was born precisely to climb those scales. 4.5/10.
