Around the beginning of the nineties, the leader of the 3rd Bass MC Serch discovered the KMD group (acronym of Kousin Much Damage), formed by the brothers Dingilizwe and Daniel Dumile, respectively known with the monikers DJ Subroc and Zev Love X.
Together with them, there's Onyx the Birdstone Kid. Their debut album, released in 1991 for Elektra, is a concept based on the character of Mr. Hood, a guy who speaks with the members of the group. The group brings out a quite honest lyricism, there are political, socio-conscious, and other more simple and humorous songs, scattered pro-black bars, and in general a positive and cheerful mood, a carefree and naive style.
The boys have fun and have talent, there's Dumile, also known as MF DOOM, but you do not recognize him, here he's young and easy-going, and has a very different voice and style compared to his most popular works. The production is provided by the group itself, has good samples and simple, light, essential, positive and generally not excellent, albeit accessible, jazzy or funky rhythms. It's a good album, solid and fun, however there's an excessive amount of redundant material and with a few less tracks, it would certainly have been of higher caliber.
A sophomore is expected, always under the direction of Elektra, but Daniel Dumile's brother, DJ Subroc, is killed in a car accident and the sequel no longer sees the light: Dumile retires from the scenes, returning in 1999 under the MF DOOM moniker and releasing a KMD sequel the following year, "Black Bastard".
Highlights: "Crackpot", "Humrush", "Nitty Gritty", "Peachfuzz".
Rating: 7/10.
