Freeway & The Jacka — Write My Wrongs [mixtape]

Promotional mixtape preceding the collaborative album between rappers Freeway from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and The Jacka from Pittsburg, California. Behind the keyboards, among others, there are Jeffro, Bedrock, RobLo, DJ Toure, Erk tha Jerk, Lee Majors, Pakslap and Statik Selektah, the mixing is entrusted to DJ Child. Among the guests stand out the names of Freddie Gibbs, Jahdan, Husaiah, Phil da Agony, Hollow Tip and T-Wayne.

Most of the cuts are quite discreet and there are no weaknesses to highlight, even if the disproportionate amount of skits and interludes undermines the consistency and solidity of the tape. It sees several tests of strength of Jacka & Freeway who exalt themselves on simple, essential jazzy beats including the title track produced by Jeffro, with reggae delivery by Jahdan. Notable passages include: "Stay Asleep", amazing boom bap jazzy soulful, essential, tight, simple, light, with soulful samples in the background, and excellent rap. "Combine the Coasts", jazzy smooth rhythm, essential, tight, ethereal with a great delivery over a flawless carpet. "All Kinds of Em", another masterpiece in production: soulful, essential, tight, pure, shiny, patinated boom bap jazzy rhythm pulls out by Statik Selektah, brilliant delivery by the performers, inside also Husalah, the rhythm is dope. "Cherry Pie", same song included on the collab album, with Jynx added as guest. "So Many Animals", good boom bap jazzy soulful, rhythmic, cadenced, synthesized, nice sound, amazing rapping. "Freedom Writers", boom bap jazzy soulful ethereal, wonderful with soulful samples looped in the background, dope rapping of the duo helped by Hollow Tip and T-Wayne, brilliant track to close the tape).

If you wanted to hear Freeway and The Jacka on Beatles music, your wish comes true in "So Many Animals (Remix)", where DJ Child samples "The Heart Gently Weeps", the most controversial song of Wu-Tang Clan's "8 Diagrams", realizing a glossy production and a nice tune.

Rating: 7.2/10.
