Debut album by Marcel "Young Cellski" Wade aka 2Took, San Francisco rapper who writes, produces, mixes and performs the project. He also plays keyboards, along with The Enhancer. The numerous guests, all uncredited, are Mr. C, Lil Swoop, UNLV, Mac 10, San Quinn, Suga Bear, Baldhead Rick, Cougnut, Black C, Hitman, Dirt Bag, Leo J, SB and Young Ed.
Young Cellski grew up musically influenced by an iconic character of the Bay Area scene, Too Short, and he follows in his footsteps: around the age of sixteen, he starts selling his self-made cassettes from the trunk of his car. In 1994, he independently produced and distributed "Mr. Predicter", through his own Inner City Records label and under the moniker 2Took. The following year, he manages to print the product on CD.
The album consists of over an hour of material divided into seventeen tracks, with two skits. Young Cellski had the potential to release a solid album, you can understand that from many of his numerous guest appearances on other artists' records, and here he comes closer than ever. The formula that the young MC proposes is quite simple: funky rhythms, supported by post-Dre shrill synths, distorted and plaintive, that in the most economical moments annoy and partially ruin the tracks, some light mobb samples typical of the Bay, and patterns of drums that include the frenetic snare in the background and the lean, hard, slow kick in evidence. On this pleasant and irregular soundscape, which mixes closed, dark and hard beats with others that are more accessible, warm and soft, Young Cellski proposes bravado, criminal and street rap, performed with a dynamic flow, often relaxed, fluid, slow and regular, which allows itself to virtuosic accelerations. The album stretches excessively and features some cuts that turn out to be below average, nonetheless, the guests helped carry the project all the way with a good rap. Recommended for Bay Area fans.
Highlights: "It's On", "Deep in the Game", "Stressed Out", "Young Niggas", "Do You Feel Me", "Livin N the Bay", "Funk".
