With the release of their third album, Ultramagnetic MCs stop having importance in the hip-hop circuit. For some reason, it's better than their disappointing sophomore jinx, but it's still a long way from debut.
The production is credited to the group itself, except for four songs provided by Godfather Don in the first part of the disc, and "Adventures of Herman's Lust (Moe Love III)", rhythm attributed to the only DJ Moe Love, who is part of the group. Rapping is performed by Kool Keith and Ced Gee, the aforementioned Godfather Don is the only guest on the project. Musically, the group chooses funky / jazzy boom bap rhythms with a slow and minimal drum, sometimes hard, and good and decent jazzy samples, sometimes annoying.
An overall mediocre sound comes out, raw and tasteless, sluggish and weak, the beats are never punchy and lead the listener to fall asleep. To help the producers in the construction of the musical side of the record, there would be an entire live support band in the studio: saxophone, bass, guitar, piano, electric piano, harmonica, keyboards, percussion, horns, the boys manage to make an old and yellowish sound that perfectly adapts to the mood of the disc, mixing up to the point that it's not clear what their exact contribution is within the individual tracks.
On this type of production, Ced Gee plays faintly as ever even when attempting the hardcore performance, while Kool Keith sounds average, uninspired with his extravagant abstract lyrics interpreted with a slow, soporific delivery style: no tracks stand out, the record reaches fifty minutes with fourteen choices, but it seems longer. Released by Wild Pitch & EMI (via Capitol), the record doesn't sell too much copies, almost not charting in the rankings. Recommended for Kool Keith fans. 6/10.
