Benny the Butcher brokes the game with one of the best hip-hop mixtape albums released in 2017. After Westside Gunn in March, and Conway in May, Rochester producer DJ Green Lantern comes to place his mix and some of his beats above Benny's bars in November. Until now, the Butcher has taken part in the last three editions of "Hitler Wears Hermes" and in the classic debuts "Reject 2" and "FLYGOD", he has made appearances only inside the Griselda house. This is the disc that launch him into the pantheon of the best spitter in the rap game.
It opens a skit from a movie, then boom bap jazzy light midtempo, noir, mafioso, excellent lethal delivery of Benny who makes his way to face "Rivi", Daringer cut, tight, deep and gloomy jazzy rhythm, determined and heavy delivery of Benny who keeps things raw and on the street all the time. Trypps Beatz is the third song beatmaker, nice essential and simple jazzy soundscape, annihilated by Buffalo's MC with an energetic and hardcore delivery.
"Blood Money" is a short joint, but the Butcher doesn't stop, heavy and fast boom bap with piano dope, a tribute to almost homonymous song by Capone-n-Noreaga, that anticipates "Satriale's", yet another tribute to Benny to the TV series "The Sopranos": jazzy rhythm midtempo sublime Daringer, slow, bleak and dark, Griselda cut with Conway and Elcamino. "Camillia's" establishes a series of brilliant records, the best part of the project: DJ Green Lantern offers an excellent deep and downtempo beat here, supported by an impeccable delivery of Benny, follows a splendid jazzy production with piano dope and deep in the background, using the same rhythm of Cormega's "Beautiful Mind", another good delivery.
"52 Montana" maintains high quality with another great beat accompanied by a soulful female sample looped in the background, one of the best cuts of the tape. This excellent section is closed by Daringer, who gives a simple midtempo jazzy boom bap for "Change", with soulful samples looped in the background from Ruby Andrews' "A Change Is Gonna Come", the rapper delivers spectacularly. The next two tracks, produced respectively by Camoflauge Monk and Noc, are slightly lower than the previous ones, always good, the first offers a tight, simple and syncopated jazzy rhythm with a splendid sample from Ximena's "Porque El Amor Se Va", Noc creates a similar music, enhanced by a chipmunk soul sample from Tavares' "Out of the Picture".
"Don't Make Me" is the final choice of the mixtape: Benny closes with a classic, wonderful midtempo jazzy rhythm created by IceRocks, sample from Lee Moses' "What You Don't Want Me to Be", simple boom bap with excellent piano that accompanies the track, other piano dope keys and soulful female sample very deep, fantastic, in the background, the MC kills the cut and delivers one of his best works in his career.
Highlights: "Rivi", "Camillia's", "Fat Dom", "52 Montana", "Change", "Don't Make Me".
Rating: 8/10.
