King Tee — IV Life

Fourth studio album released by King Tee, Compton rapper who has one of the most solid discographies of the period. After three efforts with Capitol, the rapper signs with the major MCA. The production is mainly done by the rapper himself and Broadway. DJ Pooh makes a beat, among others, while the guests are DJ Pooh, Rashad, E-Swift, MC Breeze, Xzibit, Tha Alkaholiks and Nikke Nicole.

Rhythms bring back an East Coast, boom bap sound with dry, tight, honest drums and competente samples. King Tee has a slow, good style, he accelerates only if forced by the beat, in any case, he flows worthily for 50 minutes. Nikke Nicole steals the show on a bouncy jazz production provides by her and Xzibit kills the his track, in one of his first appearances in the game. The remix of "Dippin'" sounds better than the original, thanks to a poor midtempo drum and wonderful melodic g-funk synths that give the new soundscape a relaxed feel on which King Tee runs smoothly, instead of the gloomy and dark vibes of the original.

Three singles were taken from the disk ("Dippin'", "Way Out There", "Free Style Ghetto"), that is released by MCA and distributed by Universal, and it struggles to climb the charts and achieves unsatisfactory sales results for a major release. King T, one of the main rappers who influenced Biggie Smalls, left the label and joined Dr. Dre's Aftermath, with whom he was expected to release a new album.

In 1998, his new CD "Thy Kingdom Come" is ready to be released, nevertheless, It didn't make it past the initial promotional pressing and was repeatedly rejected by the label. Eventually, King Tee asked and was granted leave from the label and released what would be his final effort in 2002 as independent artist.

Rating: 7/10.
