Big L — The Danger Zone

This is second attempt in few years to pay homage to Big L after the rather weak attempt of "139 & Lenox". Progress is being made here. Producers are not credited. The guests are Terra, Herb McGruff, Big Twan, Trooper J, Mike Boogie, Buddah Bless, Killa Cam (aka Cam'ron), Bootsie, Lord Finesse, OC, Gang Starr, AG, Fat Joe, Diamond D, Liz Lucci, Richie Thums, Roc Raida and DITC.

Certainly we start from "8 Iz Enuff" followed by a remix of "Harlem NYC": this cut is a bleak jazzy boom bap, but the guests aren't at the high level of Big L. "You Know What I'm About" exploits a brilliant production, boom bap jazzy dark and dystopian, Big L delivers together with Lord Finesse. Follows a freestyle with a criminal rhythm that samples "Foul Cats" by Kool G Rap; also "Yours" has good jazzy vibes, therefore Gang Starr arrives with a light and determined jazzy production realized by Primo, Guru straight with Big L, his attack on the verse is brilliant on an iconic song. The second part of the album is based on a varied series of jazzy beats colored by dark ("Tru Master", "SKITS"), heavy ("Cluemanati"), simple and quick ("Let Me Find Out"), and gloomy ("We All Can't Ball") shades. The only exception's "5 Fingers of Death" feat. DITC: Joe goes crazy and delivers basically screaming, no one knows why.

Released by Flamboyant Music Group, Distrolord Digital and RBC Records, is a record of fifty minutes with the addition of the entire concert "Live in Amsterdam" (twenty minutes; overall positive with some sharp and overall fun) and a couple of bonus tracks: "Raw & Ready" has a dystopian beat, dark that presents a disturbing delivery of Party Arty, while the remix of "Thick" is based on an alienating, disturbing and gloomy boom bap with the DITC. Overall, after seventy minutes you realize that is pretty honest and solid with some good moments thanks to the electric rapping of Lamont Coleman and the cheerful vibes brought here by DITC, also that this compilation doesn't give him full justice.

Highlights: "You Know What Im About", "Work Part II".

Rating: 6.5/10.
