Chief Kamachi — Cult Status

Debut album by Edward "Chief Kamachi" Littlepage, a rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1998, the emcee joined the local hip-hop group created by Vinnie Paz Army of the Pharaohs after winning a rap battle with the group's member Virtuoso. Vinnie Paz called him for the new album of his other group Jedi Mind Tricks, "Violent by Design" (2000), and Kamachi recorded the track "The Deer Hunter" with the guys.

His contribution was appreciated by fans of the underground circuit and allowed him to carve out a small niche of fans, at the end of the nineties he also released some singles with the independent labels Readyrock Records (the same that in 2000 published the second album of MF DOOM's group KMD) and Come Correct.

In 2004, Chief Kamachi released his solo debut, released by Mr. Eon's label Eastern Conference and DJ Truth's label Good Hands Records. Half of the album is produced by DJ Huggy and E. Dan, who also handle the mixing. The rest of the beats are made by DJ Kwestion, DJ Mighty Mi, DJ Truth, S. Dot and Dev Rocka. Guests are Guru of Gang Starr, Charon Don, Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, State Store and Reef the Lost Cauze.

It's an angry and raw record, built on braggadocio battle rap with some street narratives, at times socio-conscious and political including the final track against the Church, in which the boy spits with anger and determination on a series of boom bap beats in the norm with a hardcore style, raw and devastating and a good vocabulary, without disdaining commercial deviations bordering on pop rap ("Queen", "This Man", "What You Doin'") and reciting some unnecessary cumbersome hooks. On a dark production in "The Best", Guru paints the best tune of the project. 7/10.
