Guru — Guru 8.0: Lost and Found

Guru's seventh and final studio album. Production is handled by solar, guests are Omar, DJ Doo Wop, solar, K Born & Highpower. The disc consists of 17 tracks (+ 1 bonus), for just under an hour total. When it comes out, it's ignored, by everyone. Critics. Fans. Friends. No magazine has given it a couple of lines, the only place where you can find something is this site, where the tape is harshly criticized. Rightly criticized.

The production is horrible in this hideous comic havoc. This is the worst thing Guru has ever released in his life. It goes against everything he has done in the rest of his musical career. The lyrics aren't important. The rap is passable. The singing is unbearable, he sings for too long and the autotune is abused in a criminal way. The music is hard to listen to, there are few melodic beats ("Best of My Yearz"), everything else sounds like a poor copy of some of the worst Southern albums.

Three rhythms stand out among the rest: that of the title track samples "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals, "Divine Rule" pays homage to "Supernature", an overwhelming eighties disco-dance hit by the French Cerrone, and finally "After Time". After having listened to these samples from musical genres usually unrelated to hip-hop records, arrived at "After Time", I expected the famous masterpiece by Cyndi Lauper, instead I find myself "We Are the Champions" by Queen. I'm pretty disappointed. Yes, Guru spits bars on a Queen sample. A chipmunk soul one, pitched up. It's the least bad cut, possibly. There's nothing positive to write about this squalor. Guru is at his worst, in "Divine Rule" he's forced to deliver faster than usual, finding himself completely uncomfortable, unfit. Far from his top condition. His latest work isn't even a swan song, it's a swan vomit. Thankfully, solar retired after this shameful record. 0.5/10.
