DJ Khaled — Suffering from Success

Seventh work in one of the worst discographies in hip-hop, that of club producer DJ Khaled. There are 25 different producers accredited in 14 tracks, for about 53 minutes of material. The guests are some of the biggest mainstream rappers of the period and some icons of the genre.

The first part is one of the worst of the year, not even Weezy can spit on such a bad beat. The title track sounds bad from the first second, "Blackball" has a bad trap rhythm, the track before has an awkward production and the one before it's trying to turn two legends into the grave at once, with cumbersome guys on a poor trap beat.

The second half lifts the record, thanks to both a Nicki Minaj in shape on average rhythms, and a better executed trap production. "Murcielago (Doors Go Up)" pays homage to the old beats of DJ Khaled, Cool & Dre do a good job of imitating it, the rhythm is a dirty, very heavy, unlivable boom bap and there are weak rappers to spit, just like in the worst days. The choices closest to having some kind of replay value are the one signed by J. Cole and Bas ("Hell's Kitchen"), and the next one, a posse track with boom bap midtempo rhythm and decent samples, which features the presence of Scarface, Jadakiss, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton, among others.

After seven LPs in eight years, Khaled begins to suffering from success, a sign that he needs to take a break. 3.5/10.
