At 53, under the moniker DJ Muggs the Black Goat, the iconic producer releases his first instrumental LP.
"Incantation" marks the sound of the whole project: dark organ, dark female sample, slow drum, dystopian vibes. A great rhythm follows with downtempo trap drum, melodic gloomy samples and obscure vibes. "Nigrum mortem" opens the best section of the work: excellent boom bap, dark vibes, good drum and good samples that build a muddy psych rock instrumental. The fourth choice boasts good samples, vibrant snare drums, and a very slow downtempo drum machine that composes a bleak dreamy beat.
A calm and dark piano closes the first part of the album, in the midst of a hazy and ghostly mood. In "Subconscious", there's a beat close to the trap, done well, with ill hi-hat, then a melodic sample arrives to contrast the dry drum in the seventh song. "Anointed" presents a ghostly mood that better reflects the gothic soul of the project, with a good downtempo drum, then "Anicca", instrumental full of plaintive strings alternating with moments of tranquility, skits, and darkening strings. The album is closed by a sound of crickets that dominates most of the last track, before the sound of something burning.
Gothic, dark, foggy album, composed of horror movie skits and ethereal traits; DJ Muggs confirms himself as one of the fittest behind keyboards right now and one of the longest-running producers on the circuit, making one of the best instrumental hip-hop records of the year. 7/10.
