Saigon — 777: The Resurrection EP

Brian Carenard returns to release a project six years after the last one, entering the scene with a twenty-minute EP consisting of seven cuts and four guests to support Saigon's aggressive lyricism, including Krizz Kaliko and Kool G Rap.

It's up to Marsha Ambrosius to open the tape in the opening choice, a sequel to a track featured in one of Saigon mixtapes ("The Return of the Yardfather", 2006), with a soul chorus, skinny drum machine, trap rhythm, and Saigon's smooth syncopated delivery. "Promise Ring" is a good short track, keeping with his daughter on a soulful jazzy beat, great boom bap with elegant piano looped in the background, great bridge and soulful outro by Krizz Kaliko.

It follows the single from this extended play: simple rhythm, frantic skinny drum machine, elegant piano tightly looped in the background, good jazzy boom bap frantic and Saigon smoothness syncopated urgent delivery, tight looped soul sample in the background and simple soulful female chorus; second energetic verse from Saigon, a style that is always flowing, unstoppable, slow and sharp, an excellent joint about the excessive violence caused by firearms in the ghettos. Clemm Rishad arrives on a dark and powerful trap rhythm, nice choice to use a dark piano looped in the background, bright, energetic delivery Saigon crisp and quick, destroying and paving the rhythm.

"The MF Effect" is one of the must-listen on the tape: powerful bap boom, skinny syncopated vibrating drum, soulful sample in the background, slow smooth syncopated delivery by Saigon, then he accelerates proving to have a very good technique, he's still among the best; hook with soulful sample, then G Rap to silently conceal the cut in a dark alley, unsurpassed flow by the Legend, clear and dope. The sixth pick boasts another perfectly accomplished soulful rhythm provided by Streetrunner, soulful sample looped in the background to value an energetic jazzy boom bap, good crisp and smooth delivery of Saigon that gives a glimpse into the past in hip-hop game. The EP is closed with a big middle finger to many people over an energetic jazzy boom bap, simple chorus, the audience seems to go to close the tape with the final applause, but the rapper announces that it's not finished and takes down more slaps in the second verse.

Saigon is in shape, legitimate props are attributed also to Streetrunner, whose soulful soundscape is flawless and admirable, really nice work. This EP is as solid as it's unexpected, although critics want it to go unnoticed.

Highlights: "Promise Ring", "The MF Effect", "Lil B.I.G.".

Rating: 7/10.
