Second solo studio album for Scarface, rapper who in the same year also released a record with the Geto Boys. In the cover, the boy brings an important reference to the De Palma film to which he owes the moniker.
The production is mainly made by NO Joe, James Smith & John Bido make three rhythms and the rapper produces two songs: the musical carpet chosen by the Rap-A-Lot beatmakers is made up of minimal boom baps, slow pounding drums, easy funky samples, some g-funk excerpts, few variations. Some choices sound outlandish, average, or cheap, and don't adequately support the Houston MC's delivery. DMG ("You Don't Hear Me Doe") and 2 Low ("Funky Lil Aggin") are the only guests of the edition, however, they're not accredited.
Scarface maintains a lyricism focused on gangsta rap narratives, with many murders, shootings, thug ish, braggadocio, simple lyrics: unlike most of his contemporaries, I don't mind his choices, he performs his bars with a slow and flowing style, energetic, but without exaggeration, and with his usual amazing flow. With 70 minutes, 17 tracks and countless skits inserted unnecessarily even within the tracks, the disc is far too long and has some unnecessary fillers: "Let Me Roll", six-minute slow rnb-ballad-funky tune "Strictly for the Funk Lovers" and "I Need a Favor", which is a kind of badly executed sexual skit-track.
Despite the long duration and the deviations in the second part, the album manages to maintain its coherence, while aware of its own imperfections: published by Rap-A-Lot and distributed by Priority, it reaches the peak among the rap records and the seventh place on the Billboard 200, being certified gold a few months after its release, nevertheless, it's unfairly panned by critics. Also, thanks to a production that, at times, turns in the right direction, the renowned MC from the South gives us timeless pearls, such as the personal "Now I Feel Ya", more than 7 minutes essential for any true-head. Recommended.
Highlights: "Comin' Agg", "The Wall", "Now I Feel Ya", "He's Dead", "I'm Black".
Rating: 7.5/10.
