Seagram — Reality Check

Second album in two years for Seagram, an Oakland rapper under Houston's Rap-A-Lot. The production is done entirely by Jeff Gray, Troy White and Seagram himself, while Too Short is the only guest on the CD.

The MC creates a fairly robust act, faithfully gangsta, but with a dynamic lyricism that varies fruitfully in different conscious and personal lands. Rhythms are good, honest, smudge-free, mostly made up of tight, pounding drums, sometimes midtempo, relaxed mobb and funky samples, good bass lines and some accessible g-funk synths. Seagram improves upon his debut and boasts a smooth, slow and calm flow, bringing some backing vocals for background and rnb hooks of his ballads. The record is opened by one of the best choices, "The Town", with a splendid mobb sample and a good rap, a track that is only matched by "Birth": tight and hard but accessible drum machine, smooth delivery, excellent mobb sounds combined with a classic sample from "For the Love of You (Part 1 & 2)" by the Isley Brothers. Ignored by critics and audiences (no more than the top 50 on the rap chart), it's a good listening hour for West Coast fans.

Rating: 7/10.
