Akinyele — Vagina Diner

The magic of Main Source's debut is inexplicable, "Live At The Barbeque" in particular has given us one of the greatest hip-hop artists in history. And Akinyele Adams, Queens, from the same school as Large Professor, Nasir Jones and Kool G Rap.

Maybe he was in a different class, because a lot of things don't work here: misleading title and cover in fact, they lead you neither to viciously and graphically sexual lyrics nor to anything even remotely close to it, the entire album of 13 tracks and 41 minutes it's mainly focused on braggadocio, sometimes the performer tackles the theme of girls, but he does it with a flow and bars so extravagant that you regret your generic MC. Large Pro produces the entire album, and sadly they are some of his b-sides: also, he must give up jazzy beats to sustain Akinyele's rough and graceless flow, providing funky boom bap rhythms with a dry, hard, pounding drum machine. The record gets too much attention from the public, entering the rap record chart, but for Interscope the sales are rightly insufficient, and the rapper remains without a label. Not recommended. 6/10.
