Small Bills — Don't Play It Straight

The debut album by the duo Small Bills, formed by the MC of New York Elucid and the producer of Michigan Lasso, is an excellent project, a union of an experimental and melodic production and an abstract and complex lyricism, not different from the projects of Elucid & Billy Woods. The album feels more accessible than Armand Hammer's releases, nonetheless, it inexplicably goes unnoticed under the radar of hip-hop releases. Elucid adapts very well to the dynamic rhythms chosen by Lasso, he offers bars with a dominant flow, proving to be in full control and feeding on many melodic collaborations, in addition to those in rap by Billy Woods and Moor Mother, among which the numerous excellent and often ethereal contributions of KAYANA and those of Fielded stand out. Overall, it's a very strong and enjoyable LP with a good replay value, deservedly among the best efforts of the season. 8.3/10.
