Skyzoo & Pete Rock — Retropolitan

Collaborative album between Brooklyn rapper Skyzoo and Mount Vernon producer Pete Rock. Consisting of a dozen songs and three quarters of an hour of listening, the project is a modern album firmly rooted in tradition, offering a retrospective look at the metropolis, hence the title.

Pete Rock's production takes you back to the nineties, boasting a dirty, raw, dusty sound, with tough drums and essential jazz and soul boom baps. Lyrically, Skyzoo proves to be in shape and delivers some of his best lyrics, interpreting them with a smooth, fluid, crisp style. The tight choice of guests, all of considerable thickness — Styles P, Griselda, Elzhi — with singer Raheem DeVaughn and Pete Rock making an appearance on the mic, strengthens the record, gives it greater value and ensures several bangers. The MC boasts great flow that easily fits into the soundscape offered by Pete Rock, one of the boy's best sets in the last decade: the two create a cohesive and solid project, every track is good, the tape is an inexplicably overlooked jewel and one of the best LPs released by Skyzoo.

Highlights: "Glorious", "Carry the Tradition", "It's All Good", "One Time", "Eastern Conference All-Stars", "Audacity".

Rating: 8/10.
