Edo. G featuring Pete Rock — My Own Worst Enemy

Collaborative album between Boston rapper Edo G and Mount Vernon producer Pete Rock, released by Fat Beats. Production is mainly performed by the latter, which provides seven rhythms, while Diamond D (of DITC), DJ Supreme One and DJ Revolution make one beat each. The Boston MC Jaysaun, who's a member of Special Teamz along with the author, is the main guest of the edition with four appearances, Diamond D, Masta Ace and Krumb Snatcha each participate with one spot.

With ten cuts and just over forty minutes of material, the project maintains a good replay value. Edo G pays homage to his hometown on a competent production of Pete Rock, which doesn't disappoint here, although, it can easily be said that he has done better in his career. Much better. He doesn't seem overly inspired or at least, that's what the music says. While the raw, minimal and gloomy production offered by Pete Rock seems to fit well on paper to the muddy Boston rap scene represented by Edo G, the two don't have the right chemistry.

The performer offers generic lyricism and honest rapping, he comes over a dozen years after his first LP in the game and the best of him is still down there, forgotten: he's not one of the best performers in history, sometimes he remembers being a good spitter and gives some solid songs, accompanied by the simple, light and essential boom bap offered by Soul Brother. If you arrive with high expectations, the tape will inevitably disappoint you, because there's nothing memorable, but if you arrive with few pretensions, you could welcome some pleasant tracks.

Highlights: "Boston", "Voices", "Pay the Price", "Wishing", "Revolution".

Rating: 7/10.
