will.i.am — Songs About Girls

Will.i.am tries again with this rap thing. It just doesn't work. Not for him. If he were considered a rapper, he would enter the inner circle as a candidate for the worst rapper ever. There are no production credits for half the album and the reason is quickly understood, the sound is embarrassing for more than an hour. The only ones who come to the rescue of this ship that is sinking in the middle of nowhere in the ocean are childhood friend Dante Santiago and the guy I-want-to-be-on-many-albums-as-possible-as-long-as-a-big-check-arrives Snoop Doggy Dogg.

This effort is a bad album: it's not about making hip-hop, pop, folk or rock music. This is bad music and that's it, it's disheartening. The boy remains tied to the N.W.A, and after being discovered by Eazy-E and signing with Ruthless, he now finds himself being distributed by Interscope: the label tied with Dr. Dre, grants him global distribution, the few professional reviewers who dare to hear this stuff, which comes in the wake of the huge commercial success of the Black Eyed Peas, aren't very excited about this listening hour. That detail aside, the record should be strong in sales, will.i.am comes from an album with his group that was first worldwide, platinum in fifteen different countries. 15! This starts off well and snatches the gold in remote Poland even before the release, it ranks in three continents, but it stops almost immediately in all the charts, very far in the Billboard 200, miraculously inside the top ten in the rap chart. Gold also in Russia and Japan, but is widely rejected by the rest of the world. Do not listen. Do not buy.
