Raekwon — Heroin Only [mixtape]

Chef Raekwon goes down hard on mixtapes in preparation for his new studio album, the follow-up to his classic debut. This project consists of 26 songs and 68 minutes of listening time, and features guests such as Ghostface Killah, Mary J Blige, Busta Rhymes, Papoose, Ice Water, Doo Wop and The Notorious B.I.G.

The first few minutes of the tape are particularly weak, then after a couple of dull tracks, it comes "Hard to Tell": Raekwon borrows the classic beat of "It Ain't Hard to Tell" created by Large Professor for Nas, and creates his own version. Other low moments follow in this tape, before "Chef's World", where the Wu-Tang's MC steals another beat from "Illmatic", that of Pete Rock. The tenth song is the remix of "State of Grace", a choice already present on one of the previous mixtapes released by Lex Diamonds during 2006. The rapper spits on a chipmunk soul sample on the next track and then steals the beat of "Eye 4 Eye 2006" from Mobb Deep. The central section features several guests including Ice Water, Busta and Papoose, as well as several pieces already present in Raikwon's previous "Vatican" tapes. At chioce number 20, is proposed "3 Bricks", the song of Ghostface Killah with Chef Raekwon & The Notorious B.I.G. that takes Biggie's verse from "Niggas Bleed". There is a good soulful excerpt of Mary J Blige in "Be with You (Remix)", then the rest of the tape is quite forgettable and generic. Average tape by Raekwon & DJ Thoro, not recommended.
