Mac Mall — Illegal Business?

Debut album by the young rapper from Vallejo Jamal Rocker aka Mac Mall, one month after turning eighteen. The production is done almost entirely by Khayree, who leaves a beat each to Mac Dre, Ferg and Brotha Luv.

The album is performed for over 70 minutes by Mac Mall, the only guests are Eboni Foster in "Ghetto Theme", Mac Dre & Ray Luv in the final cut "Pimp Shit". Lyrically, the Bay Area MC writes gangsta and pimping lyrics already read on the hip-hop circuit, there are socio-conscious, political and ghetto life deviations, he brings mainly violent thug bars and performs them with smooth, relaxed rapping, with a slow and regular flow, often dope.

The great strength of this record is the production made by Khayree: the boy, also from Vallejo, creates an impeccable soundscape, with relaxed funky boom bap rhythms, hard, pounding and slow drums, tough bass and g-funk synths deep and shrill. These awesome relaxed beats, with g-funk tones, approach the sound of mobb music, and combined with a bright and dynamic delivery style, they create an extraordinary, energetic and fluid album: despite being composed of 16 long cuts for a total of 75 minutes of listening, it's one of the best hardcore / gangsta projects of the period, surprisingly.

Released by Khayree Young's independent label Black Brotha Records, the CD achieved considerable commercial success in the underground circuit, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and managing to enter the rap record chart. Following the release of the album, Mac Mall meets 2Pac, a movie fan who directs the music video for his single "Ghetto Love": MC's career looks set for quick success after signing a record deal, however, it takes several years to see his next album and soon his name goes into oblivion.

Highlights: "Sic Wit Tis", "I Gots 2 Have It", "Cold Sweat", "Versatile", "Da Bank Heist", "Don't Wanna See Me", "Young N da Game", "$$ on da Dank", "Illegal Business?", "Ghetto Theme".

Rating: 8.8/10.
