Logic — Bobby Tarantino [mixtape]

Tape braggadocio made during his world tour of "The Incredible True Story", released exclusively to stay relevant in the music industry and give his basic niche something to eat while waiting for his next album. Many fans and casual listeners, years after its release, consider this first chapter of the "Bobby Tarantino" series to be his best project, probably completely ignoring the existence of any of the "Young Sinatra" mixtapes, therefore, as a fan of Logic or simply curious, it's a listening that must be done sooner or later. There's no information on the production, which appears credited to 6ix and Logic, while Pusha T is the only guest on the project.

The intro is in reverse on a good female melodic soul sample and piano in the background, followed by "Flexicution", a boom bap rhythm difficult to deal with drum trap in which Logic spits bars with a mediocre rap. "The Jam" features a slightly better beat, still boom bap, again with a trap drum machine and honest samples, however, the quick rap corrected with autotune provided by the rapper reminds me of something Travis Scott did previously on his most recent album or similar artists, in any case he's biting someone. Track number four is as bad as the previous ones: boom bap, drum trap, honest samples, slow delivery, effortless, mumble; it comes a switchbeat, the MC from Maryland spits fast but doesn't save the cut. Skit, so the second part of the project takes on better contours than the first one.

On a boom bap with drum traps and good samples, Logic's rap sounds better than usual even before the arrival of the MVP, excellent as always even on low rhythms like this. Track number seven is pretty decent, similar musical carpet to the others, average rap. An interlude follows that takes the listener to the one truly noteworthy thing about this entire mixtape, "44 Bars": sample soul that breathes happily, ethereal, from the first seconds you understand that this cut has nothing to do with everything else. A second melodic soul sample also arrives, this time female, brilliant, accompanying a hard and dry downtempo drum. Logic lets the rhythm breathe, then drops 44 bars in rap, slow, smooth, dope flow, here the MC is at his best in career and does a great job, the only good thing of the project. The tape is closed by two mediocre choices, where on low rhythms, the rapper spits without too much effort and continues to have fun.

"Bobby Tarantino" is the first really obvious sign that Logic is a declining artist: he's just having fun here, good for him, peace, but he's not doing a good job musically. If you don't pay too much attention to it, if you listen to the tape as background music, it's a pretty satisfying album and fun too, I'd add good. Nonetheless, if you try to see it as more than just a distant sonic noise while you're trying to do something else, then it starts to fail: lyrically, it's bland, with the artist bragging all the time and unable to find something valid to say, and musically, it's poor, almost completely giving up sampling (two samples in eleven songs), with a series of very generic and unattractive trap rhythms, not to mention a whole series of hooks that are certainly some of the worst of the season in rap.

This effortless and deeply irregular 11-track (three skits), half-hour-long trap tape is an excellent commercial hit, and it shows him that he don't really need to sweat so much and do so much work to have rap glory and make a lot of money, and who wouldn't want to have both, especially after experiencing what Bobby went through? Released by Visionary Music Group and Def Jam, the mixtape is good both in streaming and on the street, selling thousands of physical copies and moving close to the top ten in the pop chart and at the second place among rap albums, becoming one of the best-selling records of the season and obtaining gold certification from the RIAA.

Rating: 5/10.
