Fat Joe & DJ Drama — What Would Big Do 2021

Album number thirteen for veteran Bronx-born rapper Fat Joe. The decision to entrust the production entirely to Cool & Dre is fortunate and intelligent: the boys create dynamic and relaxed rhythms, pop mainstream rhythms, summer melodic boom baps, with glossy, alternative touches, jazz and soul samples.

On this type of soundscape, Fat Joe flows with a fluid, relaxed, calm, slow delivery style, aided by several guests who almost exclusively place the hooks, between autotune contributions and soul-rnb performances. The guests are Remy Ma, CeeLo Green, Nefertitti Avani, Angelica Vila, Dre, Ivory Scott, French Montana, Lil Yachty, Sevyn Streeter, DJ Khaled, and Amorphous.

CeeLo Green lights up the opening cut on a melodic soul sample and midtempo dry drum, then Fat Joe appears at his best in "Diamonds", slow, confident, inspired, on an excellent production by Cool & Dre. For the rest of the tape, he has fun with friends, even trying the cover of a classic ("Africa" by Toto; his result is predictably bad). 9 tunes, 25 minutes, is an acceptable tape for Joey Crakk's level. I read the title right now and see the reference to Big Pun: it's amazing that the boy can do nothing but bite Griselda — the reference is to the title of their debut album as a collective, released in 2019 — and it's the same one that eliminated Pun's homies from the Terror Squad group in the early 2000s. 6/10.
