ShrapKnel — Cobalt EP

NY duo ShrapKnel, made up of Curly Castro and PremRock, debuts in the rap game with an EP of eight short cuts and a listening time of 26 minutes.

Messiah Musik provides an essential jazzy rhythm for the first tune, the duo performs quite well, follows a darker, minimal and tight beat in "Dagger & Cloak", made by Elucid, the two MCs make a discreet track. Elucid also produces the following track, urgent and simple beat with skinny drum and sirens in the background, the two performers deliver with good style. "Hubris" is one of Fresh Kils best tracks, splendid dark, tight and simple rhythm, with dark piano in the background, they deliver well together with host Jyroscope.

The fifth song boasts a production of Fresh Kils and PremRock, dark and tight, simple rhythm, interpreted with an almost spoken delivery style. Skech1985 is the host of "Stone Sly", Elucid's alternative, tight and dark rhythm, decent delivery, the host has a whimsical and raw style. The two concluding pieces are two remixes of the previous ones. Small Professor achieves a somewhat annoying rhythm in the first remix, despite a good jazzy piano, good delivery by Castro and PremRock, while Maker is behind the keyboards in the last song: boom bap skinny, light jazzy rhythm that contrasts with the drum machine pounding and skeletal, good delivery.

Overall honest, Curly Castro and PremRock spit abstract bars with tight style on mostly dark minimal beats, but failing to build any particular strong moments. 7/10.
