Inspectah Deck — Cynthia's Son [mixtape]

Four years after his last solo project, and a year after Czarface's acclaim, Jason Hunter releases a mixtape dedicated to his mother. Inspectah Deck is responsible for the music half of the time, the other part is provided by Phantom of the Beats, MoSS, Chin Beats, Blastah Beatz, Chedda Bang, Bronze Nazareth, Crummie Beats and DJ Homicide. The guest section is dry, with Ida Divine, Babiegurl and Chedda Bang taking part.

Unlike the entire career of the Staten Island rapper, the music chosen by the producers is good, melodic and coherent, the rhythms are accessible, there's a vast quantity of soul and jazz material, the drums are contained, the beats don't mess, there's no mess, no one does damage. Incidentally, DJ Homicide still proves to be a bad beatmaker by dropping a ridiculous rhythm for the last track and trying to disprove everything I wrote in the previous sentence. Rapping is good, maybe not excellent all the time, that's okay. No one brings the beat of the year or anything like that, but Inspectah Deck is comfortable with these smooth, quiet and enjoyable choices, creating his best project since his debut. He proves that, with some time on his hands, a smaller playing time and a competent dude behind the keyboards churning out some soulful soundscapes, the rapper would still be able to create great hip-hop music. The cover is interesting: quite simple, a generic filter, title below, along with the "parental advisory" shtick, the author in the center, while at the top there's his symbol, the magnifying glass that highlights the Wu-Tang logo next to one of his most famous monikers, forming the word "WINS". It's quite sensational that the mixtape has gone unnoticed by both the public and critics, especially being released after the artist has found his path back on the circuit. 7/10.
