Criminal Manne — Solo Tape

Criminal Manne (Project Playaz) is a rapper from Memphis, Tennessee, he releases his second cassette for DJ Squeeky Productions, the label of the Memphis producer of the same name, who realizes all the rhythms here.

The tape, released in '94, doesn't differ from the rest of the cassettes that came out of the city in this period, the themes chosen are violent, raw and criminal, while the sounds chosen by DJ Squeeky are dark and simple: the beatmaker chooses a boom bap midtempo lo-fi beat always good, with lean light slow syncopated drum machine and honest samples, fit with the interpreter's slow smoothness syncopated delivery and simple hooks. The first six tracks are all equally good, the first real novelty comes with "Mr. Manne", choice number five that features the same elements as the previous beats, a tight drum, two piano keys looped in the background and a splendid tense jazzy bridge for the functional chorus. The tape is closed by "They Can't Faze Me", the only really different rhythm that comes in the finale, boom bap g-funk with decent synths, skinny slow and tight drum and tight and flowing slow syncopated delivery with an uncredited girl closes the tape, I believe. Good 25-minute tape, several non-credit guests, recommended for Memphis rap fans.

Rating: 7/10.
