In 1995, the Elektra rejects the two new Pete Rock albums, "Center of Attention" and "The Original Baby Pa", which in 2003 the Rapster Records label manages to publish. The latter should be the debut for the rapper Sylvester "Deda" James aka Baby Pa, affiliated of Pete Rock who produces the entire project. The LP, 13 songs plus a bonus track, for a total of 58 minutes, is personal, without guests credited. The singer Vinja Monica and the rapper Ex Cons partecipate as not credited with a spot each.
The music created by Pete Rock maintains its typical sound, boom bap mainly jazz and soul, with funk touches, hard and skeletal drums: is production is still splendid, and I prefer this one to "Center of Attention", but, the test of Baby Pa in the rapping side is inferior to that one of the group in the twin record. Personally, I like the voice of Deda, he has a good delivery style, a decent raw flow, with elementary lyricism, however, his bragga rapping is amateurish. Vinja Monica obscures him in "How I'm Livin'", with a pretty nice hook and the soulful chorus in background, even Ex Cons sounds better than him in "Markd4death", over a immaculate boom bap, light and beautiful, by Pete Rock.
In some places, you might read that these aren't the best rhythms of Pete Rock, this isn't its finest set, with humble, I dare to contradict: his musical choices are basically flawless, all the tracks sound excellent, the carpets are modern, fresh, amazing. In summary, they're probably just a step below that of "Center of Attention". Just for all its tributes to AZ and Nas, it's a mandatory listening for East Coast stans. 7.5/10.
